Ohio Golf Journal October 2018

2018 GOLF SEASON IS WINDING DOWN IN OHIO FRED ALTVATER You KnowYou are a Golfaholic if: You set your DVR to record the Ryder Cup from Paris, but still got up at 4:00 AM to watch it. European Ryder Cup Captain, Thomas Bjorn is the “Smartest Man in Golf” for choosing Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter... It’s October in the Buckeye state. Football season is in high gear and the leaves are turning brilliant, reds, oranges and yellows. Although 2018 is winding down, it’s a great time of year to be a golfer. High School golfers from around the state try to make it through regionals and on to Columbus for the OHSAA state tournament. Please support your high school golfers; they are the future of the game. The Fall Collegiate Golf season is also under way and we preview the major college golf teams in Ohio. Ohio universities have a rich tradition and we are sure 2018-19 will not disappoint. With the turning of the leaves and cooler nights, most Ohio Golfaholics dream of warmer climes to extend their golf season. Alabama known for the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, also has other great golf destinations. We talk about a few of those in our feature article this month, plus Mike May lists his seven top Golf Holes in Bama. In a story that was not heavily covered in any golf media outlet, Rob Spittle, a Buckeye Alum, retired from the Champions Tour, after a 13-year professional career that didn’t start until he was 50 years old. It is a great story of perseverance and working with a plan, toward a goal. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Tiger Woods’ comeback can be rated a huge success, with his win at the Tour Championship, but his performance was somewhat less than spectacular in the Ryder Cup. Team USA is still winless in Europe, but we can look forward to another season of the PGA Tour getting started with the Fall Series. The major amateur titles have been awarded in Ohio and all that remains to close out 2018 is to crown a new Race to the CME Globe, Charles Schwab Cup and Race to Dubai Champions. There is still a lot of golf left for 2018, I hope I see you on the Back 9. ~by Fred Altvater Ohio Golf J ournal
