Ohio Golf Journal September 2019

LABOR DAY IS HERE SIGNALING THE END TO ANOTHER YEAR OF GREAT GOLF! FRED ALTVATER You are a Golfaholic if: You think WWJD on a bracelet means: What Would Jack Do? The truest thing that was ever said about golf was that golf is a study of a lifetime, of which you may exhaust yourself, but never your subject..... The PGA Tour 2019 season is a wrap. Rory McIlroy took home the BIG Check and the 2019-2020 season is set to kick off at the beginning of October. Q-Schools are bringing a new crop of young golf professionals to the LPGA, while the Race to the CME Globe, Charles Schwab Cup and Race to Dubai will determine winners on the LPGA, Champions and European Tours. The Solheim Cup will be held at Gleneagles, in Scotland, September 13-15 and always provides plenty of excitement for golf fans. In two years, the next Solheim Cup will be right here in Toledo and planning has already begun. Fall also signals the start of the college golf season. In this issue we recognize all the major college golf programs around the state. Ohio has long been a breeding ground of great young golfers and the college programs help nurture that talent. Ohio State and Kent State are nationally recognized as two of the leading golf teams in the country and look to be strong again this year. The coaches at Toledo and Bowling Green are looking to grow their programs and facilities to contend with the best. The Glass City Classic will be held at Inverness, September 16-17 and will feature several Big Ten schools, as well as, many other major college women’s golf teams. ‘Slow Play’ has become a major issue in professional golf. Ed Travis writes about the real culprits of slow play, the European Tour has taken action to penalize it and Richard Todd explains how we need to train junior golfers to pick up the pace. This issue is loaded with great golf information and news. We hope you enjoy it. Meanwhile, I have to get to the tee and get my round in before the sun sets on yet another great golf year. Hope I see you on the Back 9. Ben Hogan Ohio Golf Journal
