T3 particular green speed during difficult weath er carries a serious risk of causing lasting dama ge that could negatively impact smoothness a nd speed for weeks to come. To protect putti ng green turf, golf course superintendents m ay raise mowing heights or reduce the frequen cy of mowing and rolling during stressful weath er. These adjustments mean temporarily slow er green speeds, but they will help preserve go od playing conditions for the weeks and mont hs ahead. It’s easy to understand how golfers can pla ce too much emphasis on green speed. Numbe rs invite comparisons and faster can easily be mistaken for better. However, if we can keep t he big picture in mind and remember that speed is just one of many factors in putting green qualit y, we’ll save ourselves and superintendents a l ot of headaches.
