Ohio Golf Journal December 2020
When we look back on this season, I for one, believe, we should all be tremendously grateful to be connected to a sport that by its very nature requires social distancing and, in most cases, the great outdoors. There was a short disruption in our schedules as state government and public health agencies came to terms with how golf should proceed. Some events were delayed, or cancelled, but ultimately most of us had a greater opportunity to play more rounds. Data supports an actual boom for rounds played in the state, plus the golf equipment industry has set record sales numbers. Looking back, we only lost one day due to the State Mandated Golf Shutdown, Saturday, March 28th . Many of the 113 health districts, and municipalities, were cautious in approving the reopening of courses. Guernsey County Health District did not authorize final approval until June. Everyone was trying to take the most prudent course of action to protect lives. Almost to a person, I found every Health Department employee polite, resourceful and in many ways accommodating. The Ohio Health Care workers can never be thanked enough for what they have had to endure though this trying and difficult time. It appears there still be many dark days ahead of us. In the beginning it seemed that many of the mandates for golf operations, did not make sense. However, many of these mandates have also given our industry a chance to rethink everyday duties and adopt new methods to assure safety at the facility. In the end golf was not adversely affected by not having Ball Washers, Bunker Rakes and leaving the Flagsticks In? What’s the main lesson to be learned from the pandemic? Let’s chill out, take ourselves a little less seriously and enjoy chasing a little ball, in the great outdoors. Throw in a few friends and family, stay socially responsible and be grateful for the opportunity. I for one, do not think it ruins a good walk! Happy Holidays and we hope to see you in the Spring! What a Season! Steve Jurick, Executive Director, Miami Valley Golf Association
