Golf Prepares for Fans FRED ALTVATER You are a Golfaholic if: You go on a Buddies’ Golf Trip and Play 36 holes every day even if it is freezing and raining sideways. Golf is a game of misses. The guy who misses the Best, is going to win...... The OPEN Championship was scheduled to be competed at Royal St. Georges in July, but it was cancelled due to the pandemic. Instead we offer a tribute to the Old Course from our European Correspondent, Kieran Clark. He resides in St. Andrews and has a special place in his heart for the ‘Auld Sod.” The PGA Tour returned to action in June. July will feature the Rocket Mortgage Classic in nearby Detroit, plus two events to be held at Muirfield Village, the Workday Charity Open, without fans and the Memorial Tournament, with fans. The Memorial will be the first sporting event of any kind that will be contested with fans present. Extreme measures have been taken to assure the safety of fans, volunteers and the players. Every other professional sport is watching this event closely to be better prepared when they resume. Also, in Toledo the LPGA Tour will restart its season with two events. The Drive On at Inverness and the Marathon Classic at Highland Meadows. The Marathon will be the first women’s event that will allow fans to view the action. The question becomes, with the numbers of infected increasing daily and medical facilities strained to handle the load, will professional sports be allowed to continue through the summer and fall, plus will they be allowed to have fans present? In this issue, Len Ziehm takes us on his first golf trip of the year to Santee, South Carolina, Jim Grosjean reveals the great golf in Scottsdale and Mike May writes about a one-of-a-kind Cart Girl at BOYNE Mountain’s golf courses. Golf is in high gear in Ohio and maybe I will see you on the Back 9. Ben Hogan Ohio Golf Journal
