August 2021 Ohio Golf Journal
Golf Season is in Full Swing in Ohio FRED ALTVATER You are a Golfaholic if: You spend over $500 every summer playing in charitable golf outings. We all tend to get impatient with imperfect shots, but you must remember, less than perfect shots win Opens........... E very Golfaholic anxiously awaits the Ryder Cup every two years. Due to COVID it has been three years, since the Europeans handed the hapless American team yet another defeat in France. The Europeans have owned the cup for nine of the last 12 Ryder Cups, it’s time for Team USA to get back into the game and win the Cup back. This year the Ryder Cup will be held on the Straits Course at Whistling Straits near Kohler, Wisconsin. It is a Pete Dye design that sits along the Lake Michigan coastline. Dye used a stair step process that created views of the lake from nearly every hole. The clubhouse sits at the property’s highest point and is a masterpiece made of stone. Speaking of competitions, we can’t wait to see the Solheim Cup when it is held at the Inverness Club in Toledo over the Labor Day weekend. Outside of an Ohio State versus Michigan football game, the Solheim Cup will be the largest event Ohio has ever seen. Europeans coming to the state may still be limited by COVID travel restrictions, but it promises to be a HUGE event. This month OSU’s Scarlet Course will once again host the Korn Ferry Tour for the second leg of its Final Series that will determine 25 winners of 2022 PGA TOUR cards. The Olympics just wrapped up in Tokyo and I know many of you will disagree, but we wonder if Golf is really an Olympic sport? The Ohio Golf Hall of Fame inducted three worthy candidates at the beginning of the month. Stu Francis, Rosie Jones and Meg Mallon reached the pinnacle of golf and have ties to the Buckeye state. The weather has been nearly perfect this summer for golf in Ohio and although Fall is drawing nigh, it seems I always play my best in September and October. Hope I see you on the Back 9. ~ Raymond Floyd Ohio Golf Journal
