June 2021 Ohio Golf Journal

NOPGA to Have a Busy June June will be a very busy month for the Northern Ohio PGA (NOPGA) section. Ten events throughout the month will culminate with the 100th Ohio Open to be held at Westfield Country Club. Past winners of the Ohio Open include some very familiar names, Denny Shute, Byron Nelson, Herman Keiser, Billy Burke, Frank Stranahan, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf. Northeast Ohio Amateur Returns to Windmill Lakes Golf Club The Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship began in 1931 as the Plain Dealer Invitational. In 1953, a young Arnold Palmer won the tournament with a record-setting score and the victory garnered front page headlines. In the 1960’s, the Plain Dealer lost interest in the event and the Northern Ohio Golf Association (NOGA) revived the amateur tournament in 1965, rebranding it as the Northeast Ohio Amateur. Various courses and attempts to split the days of competition were tested to draw more competitors, but by the 2000’s interest dwindled. With more collegiate amateurs seeking competition, NOGA reached agreement with the legendary Herb Page to hold the event at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna, home of the Kent State Flashes. Great Lakes Auto came on board as the main sponsor and now the event is one of the most important amateur tournaments in the state. The 91st playing of the Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship presented by Great Lakes Auto returns to Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna for a third consecutive year.
