October 2021 Ohio Golf Journal

September Was a Very Busy Golf Month FRED ALTVATER You are a Golfaholic if: You play 12 rounds in 17 days from Michigan’s U.P. to Myrtle Beach. How can you ever get tired of playing golf?............ S eptember was a very busy month for us. I was able to play 12 rounds in 17 days, from Michigan’s U.P. to the South Carolina coastline, which is quite an accomplishment for this old duffer. First, we traveled to Michigan’s U.P. to visit the “Perfect 4some” of Great Golf; Sweetgrass, Sage Run, Greywalls and Timberstone. Stay at the Island Resort and Casino and have the best of all possible golf getaways. I was able to slip in a round at The Inverness Club before we headed south to America’s Golf Mecca, Myrtle Beach. Nothing is better than beach time, along with your golf. We were fortunate to visit Mystical Resort’s Man-O-War and Wizard courses. Although on the same property, they are as different as two courses can be. We will talk more about them and their entertaining owner, Claude Pardue in the November issue. Although COVID rules were in place, it did not affect our enjoyment of the courses and beach opportunities. This October issue is jam-packed with golf news, information, travel and equipment reviews. Susan Pollack wrote a very interesting piece about the changes and upgrades at BOYNE, that she saw first-hand on her recent visit. Len Ziehm added his Hall of Fame insights to Sage Run and Sawgrass at the Island Resort. Mike May wrote about Maple Creek, one of Pete Dye’s early efforts in Indiana. If you are planning a trip to Florida this winter, Dave Theoret enlightens our readers about public golf opportunities in the Fort Lauderdale area. We were also fortunate to attend the induction of Marianne Reece into the Toledo Golf Hall of Fame and congratulate her on the honor and her career serving area golfers. October is a beautiful month for golf in Ohio, I hope I see you on the Back 9. ~ Raymond Floyd Ohio Golf Journal
