September 2021 Ohio Golf Journal

Where Did the Year Go? FRED ALTVATER You are a Golfaholic if: You can’t sleep the night before the Ryder Cup starts. I couldn’t wait to get up in the morning, so I could hit balls. A crisply hit golf ball is a joy that very few people experience............ T he Solheim Cup and FedEx Cup are over, the Ryder Cup is on the horizon and Fall is drawing near. September and October always offer some of the best golfing opportunities of the year. Casual golfers head to football games and bowling alleys, leaving the links to serious golfers. Even though COVID is still around creating minor havoc with medical facilities around the country, golfers are continuing to visit golf courses in record numbers. It is the only safe sport that can be played outdoors and maintain safe separation. September also brings the rebirth of high school and college golf. It’s great to see both being played, although college administrators and coaches are being challenged by the new Supreme Court ruling that allows collegiate players to be compensated for use of their name, image and likeness. We had a chance to visit BOYNE inAugust and found the new room renovations at the Highlands to be comfortable and beautifully appointed. BOYNE has a huge renovation project planned for the Highlands over the next three years and we can’t wait to see the finished product. We were able to play four of BOYNE’s ten courses and each was immaculate. Word to the wise, now would be a good time to book your golf getaway for next year at 2021 prices. In this issue you will find PING and PXG Iron reviews from golf equipment expert, Ed Travis. Travel notes from Len Ziehm and Indiana I-64 golf travel tips from Mike May. Ed Schmidt writes that we don’t need to travel to Scotland, or Ireland to find great links golf. It can be found right here in the United States. We hope you enjoy the September issue of Ohio Golf Journal and just maybe we will see you on the Back 9 of your favorite course. ~ Raymond Floyd Ohio Golf Journal
