In the 22nd renewal of the Ohio Cup, the Northern Ohio PGA Team defeated the Southern Ohio section 17-15. The annual Ohio Cup features a match-play format with teams comprised of the nine top section members, six senior members, plus one Captain’s Pick.
The Northern Ohio PGA team started strong in the first day’s four-ball session at Kirtland Country Club and took the early 5.5-2.5 lead. The Southern team rebounded in the afternoon and at the end of day only a single point separated the two teams, 12.5-11.5.
The final-day singles matches were hard fought and many went down the wire. In the end the Northern Team managed to eke out another full point advantage 8.5-7.5 to win the Ohio Cup by two full points and will hold bragging rights for one more year.
Two Northern Ohio Team members, Jim Troy, from Mt. Vernon Country Club and Mike Stone from Belmont Country Club, were the only players from either team to win all of their matches.
