BOYNE Resort can trace it beginnings to 1948, when it was opened primarily as a winter ski resort on a 40-acre hillside. In 1966, Robert Trent Jones Sr. was contracted to build the first golf course, the Heather, at the Highlands and it was immediately recognized by Golf Digest magazine, ranking it in the “Top 100 Courses in the U.S.”

The Heather Course is still the flagship course for BOYNE Golf and has hosted several professional, as well as high-profile amateur events.

Even today, BOYNE Golf continues to grow and now boasts 11 courses at three locations, The Mountain, The Highlands and The Bay Harbor Golf Club. The newest of those being Doon Brae, a short course that adds a new challenge for golfers.

In Scottish, Doon means going down into a valley, and Brae means steep bank or hillside, thus Doon Brae is a fitting name for the new par-3 course as it sits as the base of the ski hill.

Adjacent to Doon Brae, directly behind the Highlands Main Lodge, is the new 1.5 acre, 27-hole, Himalayan-style putting course, ‘The Back Yaird.’ Grab your putter to enjoy an afternoon with the family, or slip out after dinner, with your favorite beverage, to test your putting skills on the undulating putting courses.

If you are on a girl’s golf getaway, buddy’s trip, or family vacation, ‘The Back Yaird’ is a must to round out your day at BOYNE Highlands.

BOYNE Golf has been recognized as one of North America’s most prominent golf destinations and earns high praise from golfers.

Earlier this year, USA Today ranked BOYNE Golf as ‘The Best Golf Destination’ in the U.S. for a golf getaway. In addition, The Highlands was ranked No. 2 in USA Today’s ‘BEST Golf Resort’ category.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by USA Today’s 10 BEST, alongside some of the best golf destinations in the country,” said Josh Richter, PGA, Senior Vice President of Golf Operations for BOYNE Golf. “To be ranked No. 1 among these great destinations is a testament to our BOYNE Golf teams from golf professionals, agronomy, lodging, and food and beverage who ensure that our guests have the best golf experience when visiting BOYNE Golf.”

For almost 60 years, BOYNE Golf has been a leader in destination golf. With the addition of the new Doon Brae short course and Back Yaird putting course, they continue to add a diverse golf experience for their guests.

“Having The Highlands ranked No.2 among all the great golf resorts in the survey is a credit to the combination of luxury lodging, great championship golf, and service,” said Mike Chumbler, President and General Manager at The Highlands. “The resort’s significant investment into the Main Lodge renovations, combined with our ongoing golf course renovations, has elevated the guest experience, which contributed greatly to the overall No.1 ranking for BOYNE Golf.”

With five courses, The Highlands offers a perfect golf experience. The new short course, Doon Brae, located behind The Highlands Main Lodge at the base of the ski hill, opened for play in June of this year.

Other courses at The Highlands include The Heather, The Arthur Hills course, The Moor, and the Donald Ross Memorial.

Both USA Today “10 BEST” lists were carefully curated by a panel of experts and editors before being voted on by the public.

According to USA Today,

“Golfers are always ready, if not eager, to check their bags and hop aboard a plane for a round in a beautiful place. And the U.S. is filled with course-rich destinations that beckon golfers to enjoy the sport while surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, such as these 20 spots that have been nominated by an expert panel as the best golf destinations in the country, Beyond the greens, these locales are brimming with luxurious accommodations, gourmet dining spots, and other outdoor recreation opportunities, making them well-rounded getaway spots.”

USA Today said about the top resorts,

“Golf resorts provide the perfect blend of luxury, relaxation, and sport — all wrapped up in one stunning and convenient spot. These 10 resorts — nominated by an expert panel and voted by readers as the best in the U.S. — have at least one standout 18-hole course, provide top-notch accommodations and amenities, and offer delicious dining options. They also offer a range of other activities so that the non-golfers along for the getaway have plenty to enjoy, as well.”

It is a given that BOYNE Golf offers the best golf packages available for golf explorers, but they also complement their award-winning golf with premier lodging at three separate locations. Located along the shores of Lake Michigan, The Inn at Bay Harbor offers top-of-the-line accommodations, with jaw-dropping views. The beautiful Mountain Grand Lodge and Chalet Edelweiss at Boyne Mountain have been recently upgraded and are perfect for family vacations, or reunions. The Main Lodge at The Highlands has been transformed into a high-end boutique hotel reminiscent of an English country estate with Scottish Highlands charm. All three locations and lodging will please even the most hardened traveler.

The demand for golf travel has boomed in this country and BOYNE Golf is constantly renovating and creating new and interesting amenities for their guests.
