Last August OSU’s graduate transfer recorded a runner-up finish at the U.S. Amateur, which gained him entry into the 2024 Masters. He made the cut, won the Silver Medal as the Low Amateur and received national attention playing with and besting Tiger Woods in the final round on Sunday.
He then rolled that into his most successful collegiate season, averaging a career-best and team-leading 71.35 strokes per round. He had six top 10’s in collegiate play this year for the Buckeyes. He also recorded his lone collegiate victory at the Southwestern Invitational in January.
This was Shipley’s second Honorable Mention All-American award of his collegiate career, as he also earned the award last season, while at James Madison.
Shipley Continued Magical Season at U.S. Open
At the U.S. Open Shipley continued his great play and was only one of two amateurs to make the cut. Playing with Luke Clanton, from Florida State, in the final round, Shipley edged out Clanton for Low Amateur honors on the last hole at Pinehurst.
Shipley joined a very short list of amateurs, Ken Venturi (1956), Jack Nicklaus (1960), Phil Mickelson (1991), Matt Kuchar (1998), and Viktor Hovland (2019) to finish as the low amateur at both The Masters and the U.S. Open in the same year. Those previous winners all went on to have very successful professional careers.
Shipley began his professional career last month on the PGA Tour Americas at The Beachlands Victoria Open in Canada, firing four rounds in the 60’s and finishing T-9.
He also made the cut and had a Top 25 finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in his first start on the on the PGA Tour.
