On a recent golf trip to the foothills of northeast Georgia, I discovered the Mike Young designed, Cateechee Club in the quaint town of Hartwell. This spectacular par 72, 18-hole championship golf course, carved from 420 acres of virgin forests and green meadowland, opened for play in 1997.
The slope, a very respectable, 137 and course rating of 73.0, feature dramatic elevation changes, from high ridges that afford panoramic views to low-lying wetlands along Cedar Creek, which meanders throughout the property.
You will not find any homes around Cateechee to distract from the natural beauty of the pristine fairways and greens. Cateechee is an Audubon Signature Sanctuary, as well as, recently rated a Four Stars Destination by Golf Digest.
With an expansive clubhouse and grounds, the Club can accommodate large corporate meetings, as well as, family gatherings and weddings. The 40,000 square foot clubhouse provides abundant room to assure your event has ample space. Cateechee’s event planner and catering staff will attend to every detail to make your event perfect.
Kelli Shell, one of the owners, told us,
“It is very satisfying to be a part of an event venue with amenities people can enjoy. Our vision is to continue to have an impact on the local community and to remind folks, ‘All Roads Lead to Hartwell’.”
Cateechee is located on Georgia State Highway 77, just twenty-three miles from I-85, between the University of Georgia in Athens and Clemson University in South Carolina.
There are multiple lodging options available for large or small groups. Guests can choose from a suite in the second story of the clubhouse, which includes a private lounge, or a secluded golf cabin near the 10th hole. The cabin makes the perfect lodging for buddy’s trips. Plus, the Lake House can accommodate a larger group with 16 beds.
All overnight stays come with a free breakfast buffet and access to the fitness center. Overnighters have the option to dine in or try the ‘Take & Bake’ options for those who prefer to eat in the comfort of their personal accommodations.
The Waterfall Grille at Cateechee is casually sophisticated, yet warm and welcoming. The extensive menu includes seasonally inspired offerings, with bold flavors, reflected in the nouveau cuisine of today. They are fresh, eclectic, imaginative, always evolving and delicious.
The classic American choices are complemented by an extensive wine list and full-service bar. I had the opportunity to dine at the Waterfall twice, plus enjoy the breakfast buffet. Everything was freshly prepared and delightful.
As the sun sets, members and guests can enjoy the panoramic views sitting on the large veranda, that encompasses much of the clubhouse. There is also a private dining room for more intimate dining occasions.
If you need transportation, Cateechee also has a Mercedes Benz Sprinter Shuttle Van available on property.
I was pleasantly surprised by Cateechee Club. It offers four-star accommodations, world-class dining, as well as, championship-caliber golf. I highly recommend a visit to this Northeast Georgia Gem.
