The days are shorter, plus the nights are cooler, but fall is the perfect time to play golf in Northwestern Ohio and Southeastern Michigan.
The five courses of the Arthur Hills Golf Trail, Stone Ridge, Stonebridge, The Legacy, Maumee Bay and Leslie Park are open and ready for golfers.
Stone Ridge is the home of the Bowling Green State University Golf Teams and is one of Hills’ best designs. The Legacy sits just north of the Ohio/Michigan State Line. The par 3 8th hole is an island green, completely surrounded by water and the course is always in immaculate condition. Maumee Bay sits near Lake Erie in Maumee Bay State Park. The cottages and the lodge at Maumee Bay State Park also are perfect for spending a getaway for the entire family. Stonebridge and Leslie Park are both in Ann Arbor. Make it a full day and play both.
The first nine holes at Ottawa Park Golf Course opened for play in 1898 making it the oldest public golf course west of New York City. Located near the University of Toledo, local legend S.P. Germain laid out the original nine holes with the help of his friend William Rockerfeller. The pair was also involved in the construction of the Inverness Club and Sylvania Country Club. If you like your golf with a side of history, Ottawa Park Golf Course offers that in spades.
Two other public golf courses well worth the green fees are Riverby Hills, near Waterville and Eagles Landing, on the east side of the Maumee River in Oregon, Ohio. Both courses are owned by the Long family and are always a treat to play.
Heather Downs opened in 1925 as a horse racing track. It later became a private golf club, but today is open to the public. The layout features a few very interesting holes and the back nine weaves through large trees that border the fairways. Accuracy is a premium here.
In addition, there are a plethora of other public golf courses in area. White Pines may have the best greens of any public golf facility in the area. Bedford Hills has three nine-hole tracts, The Wolverine, Buckeye and Irish courses all offer a variety of golf and make it easy to book a tee time.
If you are looking for a quick nine, Quarry Ridge, in Sylvania, has a nine-hole short course, driving range and practice area.
Play a quick round in the morning and watch your favorite college, or professional football team play in the afternoon on the weekends.
