Remember Amy Brockerstette, the young lady with Downs Syndrome? In 2019 she made a new friend, when she parred the par 3, 16th from a green side bunker at TPC Scottsdale with Gary Woodland ahead of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
At the time Woodland commented,
“That is by far the coolest thing I’ve ever experienced. To step up in front of all those people and the crowd and everything, and to hit the shots that she hit and make par, I never rooted so hard for somebody on a golf course.”
Well Amy has gone on to bigger and better things. She is the first person with Downs Syndrome to earn an athletic college scholarship, plus she started her own Charitable Foundation.
She is currently a member of the Paradise Valley Community College and will join her teammates in competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s National Championship at Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club in Florida.
Amy and her family also created the “I Got This Foundation” to provide golf instruction and playing opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The foundation has partnered with Special Skills Sports Camps to hold the Special Skills Golf Invitational June 1st at Wedgewood Golf and Country Club in Powell, Ohio. The event will teach athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities the basics of golf, from driving to chipping and putting.
