Three tracks, two sliding weights, plus an adjustable hosel puts the Mizuno ST-G 220 driver at the head of the class, to individualize an off-the-rack stock club to fit a particular swing.
If one sliding weight is good, isn’t two better and why not throw in an adjustable hosel, as well?
That’s the approach Mizuno used for their latest entry into the hypercompetitive driver market. Two tracks run from front to back at an angle to increase proper ball flight. The rear track sits perpendicular to the face to promote a higher or lower trajectory, depending on the presence or absence of a weight.
To create a higher trajectory, without increasing the driver’s loft, both weights are placed in the rear track. To alleviate a slice, both weights go in the lower lateral track towards the heel.
To cover all the bases, Mizuno added four degrees of adjustability in the hosel, that effects loft, lie and face angle.
In the announcement to the media Chris Voshall, an engineer for Mizuno was quoted,
“Having that little bit of extra adjustability is especially useful out on tour – where we can fine-tune a player’s flight. Or make an adjustment for a particular tournament when the player doesn’t want the feel of a completely new driver. The ST-G 220 has so much more effective movement of weight along both the X and the Z axis. We can set it to be very low spin, a more playable mid spin, heavily fade or draw biased and just about anything in-between.”
