Off-Season Golf Tips

The snow is flying, the water hazards are a solid block of ice, and the greens are white. There is very little golfing that’s happening, unless you enjoy wiping ice from your clubs after a wedge shot and greens playing to a stimp of 30.

 

So, what’s a golfer to do during the winter months, while the courses are closed?

 

Reflect

Pull out all your scorecards from the last season and remember the great, and not-so-perfect, rounds. Also perform some data analysis to determine averages per course, par, yardage, or any other statistic. This will help find problem areas in your game which will aid in creating a strategy to improve.

 

Plan

Look for courses in your area that you haven’t played and make it a goal to try at least one in the coming season. Check into season pass offerings or leagues, too.

 

Equipment

Spend some time cleaning out your golf bag, removing those food wrappers, empty bottles, and old receipts. Take note of equipment that needs repaired, replaced, or upgraded.

Do you need a new sleeve of golf balls before the season starts? How is your supply of golf tees? Do you need new grips? Keep a list of wants and necessities and pass that along to Santa or members of your family.

Could your wardrobe need some updates too? Maybe a new pair of rain pants or hat is in your future.

 

Education

Try signing up for a presentation, lecture, or training either on the rules or history of our fine game.

If you really need some swing-mechanics work find a local pro that can help you straighten out that slice before the ground thaws.

Hit your bookstore and buy a new golf book or magazine! You can learn much on all aspects of the game.

Shop Local

This is a great time to visit your local course clubhouse or golf store. Just being around golf related items may make you feel better.

Keep Swinging

Putting a club in your hands throughout the winter is good for the soul, and muscle memory. Find an area in the garage, basement, outside, or anywhere that even a gentle swing can be performed without damaging the club or surrounding area.

Also look for indoor or heated driving ranges, practice facilities, or simulators.

 

Remember, even if the weather permits you to play a round that score cannot be used in handicap calculation.  See the USGA Handicap Inactive Season Schedule.
