Every year high school golf teams compete locally and across the state of Ohio, to improve their games, so the will perform well at tournament time. High school teams began practice August 1st this year and the first matches began August 4th.
Junior golfers compete in various junior associations events all summer long to prepare for the high school golf season and a chance to make to the State Tournament. NW Ohio is blessed with the Toledo Junior Golf Associaton (TJGA.golf)) and the NWO Junior Golf Association (https://www.nwojga.com/), both of which, hold a series of events throughout June and July.
While much of the state is paying attention to the State Football Playoffs, local junior golfers will be competing in the 48th Ohio High School State Athletic Association’s State Golf Tournament.
The boy’s tournament field is divided into three divisions (I, II, & III) based on the size of the enrollment of each school. Division I are the larger schools with Division III being schools with smaller enrollments.
The girl’s tournament is divided into only two divisions (I & II).
The first step is for area teams to compete in the Sectional Tournament to earn a berth in the District Tournament. In golf, participants compete not only as a team, but also as individuals. There is much riding on every swing of the golf club during the tournament.
After Districts, the top individual golfers and the top teams advance to the state tournament, held each year on The Ohio State University’s Scarlet and Gray courses.
Sectionals begin at the end of September and continue into October. Districts are held October 2-14 around the state. The State Tournament for Boy’s Division II and III, as well as, Girl’s Division II is held October 13-14.
The Division I State Tournament, for both boy’s and girl’s, is held the following weekend October 20-21.
