UT’s Barend Botha Wins Toledo Open

The 91st Habitec Toledo Open Presented by Club Car and Century Equipment was conducted at Highland Meadows Golf Club. In all 145 golfers competed in the event conducted by the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America.

A Sophomore at the University of Toledo, from South Africa, Barend Botha beat the pros with scores of 69-67 136 (-6). Jake Scott from Strongsville, Ohio and Blake Sattler from New Philadelphia, Ohio tied for second place with two round total of 137 (-5).

Botha is definitely someone to watch as he completed a stellar 2020-21 season at UT. He was named the MAC Conference Freshman of Year and earned First-Team All-MAC honors. He competed in all eight scheduled tournaments last year and posted the lowest scoring average for UT with a 73.5 stroke average. The freshman garnered three Top-10 finishes, and fired his season low, 66, in the opening round of Hawkeye Invitational in April. He tied for ninth at Linger Longer Invitational and was 15th at MAC Championships.

Mitch Camp won the Senior Division in a playoff with Gary Rusnak. Both finished tied at five under (137). Camp birdied the first playoff hole to capture the title senior title outright. Tony Adcock (141) and Steve Stone (142) finished third and fourth.

For the second consecutive year Terry Tyson from Perrysburg won Low Senior Amateur honors firing two rounds of 80-71=151 (+9).
