Championship in 1894 and will host it once again in 2020. It offers stunning views over Pegwell Bay and the adjacent English Channel. The deepest bunker in Great Britain is located on the fourth hole, which has hosted 14 Open Championships, more than any other course in England. Playing Royal St. George’s with a caddie was an unforgettable EXPERIENCE "EFORE THE ROUND the caddiemaster told us we would play millionaire’s golf , as we had no one in front of us and no one behind us. Throughout the round, my caddie, Gary, who has been AFÚLIATED WITH 2OYAL 3T George’s for 50 years, shared advice and stories about the course, making it one of the most memorable rounds of golf, I have ever played. While standing on the 18th tee, Gary urged me to bear down, as I needed a par four, to become the ‘Champion Golfer of the Year.’ I made my par, but, alas there was no Claret Jug awaiting me in the clubhouse! Prince’s, which hosted the British Amateur in 2013, boasts 27 holes of championship links golf in three nine-hole loops: The Shore, The Dunes and The Himalayas. Each loop has its own unique characteristics. The most famous of Prince’s many revetted bunkers is the ‘Sarazen Bunker’ on the 9th hole of The Himalayas. While in Sandwich, I stayed in The Lodge at Prince’s. It makes an ideal base for golfers playing Prince’s, Royal St. George’s, and Royal Cinque Ports. It offers unobstructed views over the English Channel, as well as, ÚNE DINING IN THE RESTAURANT The Brasserie on the Bay. The Lodge at Prince’s also houses ‘The Gallery,’ a small museum containing historical letters, pictures, trophies, clubs, and other memorabilia connected to golf at Prince’s. The focal point is the original sand wedge created by Gene Sarazen, who won the ’32 Open at Prince’s. I was privileged to hold the club, but did not swing it. Another wonderful side trip during my stay in Kent, was a visit to the Canterbury Cathedral, one of the oldest Christian structures in England. 4th Hole, Royal St. George’s Photo Credit: Jason Livy Photography Ohio Golf Journal
